Towards Unifying NASA Earth Science Enterprise-Wide Metadata Around International Standards: Study Results and Recommendations
نویسنده
چکیده
NASA’s Earth Science Data and Information System (ESDIS) Project assembled a team of data systems and metadata experts to analyze requirements and recommend best approaches for adopting the ISO 19100 series of standards for describing the data and services offered by NASA Earth Science data systems. NASA has recognized the advantages of adopting the ISO 19115 metadata standard for future Earth-observing missions. The Earth Science data centers have also recognized these advantages. The team considered the applicability, limitations, and possible profiles of this standard for the diverse data sets maintained by NASA data centers and missions. The team found compelling reasons for adopting the ISO 19100 standard to help NASA reach its interoperability goals. Achieving full integration will take time. Planning the integration will require resolution of tension between the near-term needs of new missions and heritage systems with large amounts of records using other data models.

Nasa Standards for Earth Remote Sensing Data
Earth Observing System (EOS) is one of NASA's large programs for Earth science and global change research. In order to process, distribute, and archive data from EOS satellites and to facilitate interdisciplinary research, NASA has developed the EOS Data and Information System (EOSDIS) that defines a set of standards to deal with remote sensing data. In EOSDIS, data are grouped into three conce...

NASA has impaneled several internal working groups to provide recommendations to NASA management on ways to evolve and improve Earth Science Data Systems. One of these working groups is the Standards Process Group (SPG). The SPG is drawn from NASA-funded Earth Science Data Systems stakeholders, and it directs a process of community review and evaluation of proposed NASA standards. The working g...

The NASA EOS Mission to Planet Earth (MTPE) will be both an opportunity and a challenge to visualization and analysis tool developers. The EOS Data and Information System (EOSDIS) will gather, process, and archive a Terabyte (TB) of earth science data per day. Because of the size of the EOSDIS program and the size and diversity of the Global Change community, technical decisions and standards a...
متن کاملAn Ontology Mapping Approach to Integrating Earth Science Metadata
One of the main barriers to exploiting the great wealth of global earth science data available today is that researchers are unable to rapidly search and find data relevant to their studies. This data is spread across a large number of archives maintained by different institutions employing a bewildering array of different data description languages. In this paper, we describe a metadata federa...

Metadata that describes the structure and semantics of data sources takes a significant role in enterprise information integration. Enterprise information integration always involves an increasing set of types of metadata that are dispersed in various repositories, modeled by various tools, represented in various formats. There is a crucial requirement to break the “Tower of Babel” among differ...
